You, Me and Poetry
Instructor: Floriana Hall
"Calling all poets, young and old, novice and even expert." A teaching course on how to write different types of wholesome rhyming poetry. Each month or interval, I will present a simple form of poetry, the rules, and some tips. There will be acrostic, tanka, haiku, personification, diamante, cinquains, clerihew, limericks, and others.
Poets will post their work on a lesson board where classmates can view and critique their poetry, ask questions, and become acquainted with other poets. A chance for all poets to send their beautiful messages to others."
According to Webster's Third College Edition Dictionary, a poem is defined as "an arrangement of words written or spoken, traditionally a rhythmical composition, sometimes rhymed, expressing experiences, ideas or emotions in a style more concentrated, imaginative, and powerful than that of ordinary speech or prose; some poems are in meter, some in free verse."
To me, writing poetry is like music that is played with abandon. My poems usually come to me upon awakening at five AM, and literally 'pop into my mind.' I jot them down with my busy pen and then fall back to sleep. Whatever your method of composing poetry is, know that the beautiful messages help others. Poems paint pictures in the mind about places others may not have seen, or ideas and thoughts to touch another's soul. Poems tell stories, make people laugh, or are an outlet for heartache.
With this in mind, I am calling all poets to join my teaching course on how to write different types of wholesome, rhyming, poetry. Each month, a simple form of poetry will be featured, with rules, and some tips. There will be acrostic, tanka, haiku, personification, diamante, cinquains, clerihew, limericks, and others.
A biography and poem of a master poet will also be a special attraction.
There will also be a contest each month. A different painting will be displayed monthly which will inspire all you poets out there to compose a poem about it. The colorful portraits will be from Jack Richard's Studio, a renowned artist, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and each entrant will be sent a copy. The winning poem (up to 30 lines), written in response to the picture, will be published in the ezine, Long Story Short and author will receive copy of my five star book, DADDY WAS A BAD BOY, nonfiction and written in a Christian manner, by SterlingHouse Publisher of Pittsburgh, Pa.
So don your thinking caps, or perhaps you will be inspired just by looking at the contest picture.
