Writing Children’s Fiction
Instructor: Lea Schizas
Do you love watching a child’s eyes twinkle with interest as you tell them a story? Have you always wanted to write for children but just didn’t know how or where to begin? At the end of this 6 week course, you will have completed your first draft to a children’s story and on your way as a children’s writer.
Writing for Children is not as easy as one may think and Writing Children’s Fiction will help point out the differences involved writing for the adult and children’s market.
Lea Schizas will guide you throughout the course using her knowledge and examples from her Young Adult novel The Rock of Realm and other books to demonstrate within each lesson how to master the art of writing for children.
This is a 6 week course. For personal mentoring and help to hone your work with listings to publishing venues, an extra cost of $15.00 will be added.
Course Description:
Lesson Overview:
Lesson 1: Choosing your target audience.
We’ll explore various age level guidelines in order for a writer to target the right audience.
Lesson 2: Grabbing your reader’s attention
The difference in writing for children and adults is that children need to be entertained right from the start. No waiting around to see if a book gets better.
This lesson will teach you how to begin your story and captivate your audience.
Lesson 3: Building your character and dialogue
Mr. Moopa has no personality? Let me show you how to build his character interesting enough to allow your reader to associate with them. Mr. Moopa don’t know how ta schpeak? Dialogue exploration will spruce his speech.
Lesson 4: Strengthening the middle
The middle represents the climax of the story slowly winding down to its final conclusion. This lesson will show you how to build suspense to carry your reader to its final destination: THE END.
Lesson 5: Concluding with a sound ending
Did you give any foreshadowing in the beginning? Did you pose any questions to the reader? This is the part of the story where you need to make sure you have answered each foreshadow and question a reader may have had with a satisfying ending. Leaving a reader with a ‘huh?’ feeling risks the chance of them never picking up another book from you again.
Lesson 6: How to edit, research and find a publisher.
Story is done. Now what? This lesson will show you ways of editing and researching the right market for your book.
